FAQs

WHAT WILL MY FIRST SESSION BE LIKE?

The most important thing to remember in your first session is to have fun because regardless of your goals this is what will bring you back for years to come.

You can expect a hard working but fairly informal atmosphere during class. Everyone trains at their own pace, if you just want to practice technique and not spar that's fine! If you want to jump straight into rolling as soon as possible that’s also fine. Just don’t put any expectations or unnecessary pressure on yourself and come and have fun!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

If you don’t have the uniform or equipment required for the session then don’t worry; a t-shirt that you don’t mind getting ripped and a pair of board shorts or tracksuit bottoms will be suitable. Just make sure there are no zips or buttons.

DO I NEED TO BE PHYSICALLY FIT?

Martial arts are a tool to develop both physically and mentally. This means that you start the journey where you are today. Your fitness will improve as you train and there’s no need to put off attending your first class.

I'VE BEEN ASKED FOR CARD DETAILS, HOW IS THIS MANAGED?

We'll be using a payment gateway called squareup to handle all repeat card payments and POS transactions, you'll register your card with them and all details are saved on their encrypted servers. You have total control over payments via your gymdesk portal.

WHO ARE TWO FOUR JIU JITSU?

24//JJ is a premium Jiu Jitsu club with its headquarters based in Cardiff. Run under one of the best Jiu Jitsu minds in the UK and highly regarded coach and competitor  - Bryn Jenkins.

Established in 2016 by Bryn and Omied, the then called CF24 Jiu Jitsu instantly became a well respected club with high level practitioners from all over coming to join the ranks.  With excellent instruction based around solid principles, beginners developed at an astonishing rate and the competition scene was taken by storm.

Over the years tremendous growth and evolution has occurred at 24//JJ but at the heart remain the solid principles of teaching that were cast into the foundations of the club, these are based around -

Concepts | Details | Systems

Concepts

Each topic taught will be introduced using a key underlying concept of the technique/position. This gives a simple rule set or plan to follow which will enable the practitioner to understand the key aspects of the technique/position.

Details

The devil is in the detail and that is especially true in jiu jitsu. All the sessions have a focus on the key details of each position/technique with multiple methods of teaching aids used to reinforce what's being taught. The session may include reviewing competition footage - studying world class athletes and their games or breaking down the mechanics of a position using a whiteboard. We expose you to many teaching methods to give you the best chance for improvement.

Systems

No technique is effective in isolation; the key to success is the development of an effective repertoire of techniques. All of the content at Twenty Four jiu-jitsu is taught in context of how they sit in their respective systems. This will give you an understanding of your route of progression and enable you to build your game effectively.

HOW IS A TYPICAL CLASS STRUCTURED?

Warm up -

Using movement drills, drilling of techniques or flow rolling we get our minds and bodies ready for action!

Technique -

Instructors will demonstrate and explain concepts and details of specific techniques and explain where they fit into a greater system of attacks or defences.

Drilling -

You will practice the technique on a cooperating partner, the key to being a good “Uke” (drilling partner) is giving the right amount of resistance so that your partner can practice the technique without you trying to “beat them” this is a time for feeling the movements and working together to help each other master techniques.

Pressure testing -

Using specific scenario based pressure testing we can try our techniques out on fully resisting partners to see how they work, this is a time for exploring what works for you and what doesn’t! Everyone is different - size, shape, flexibility etc.. and as such everyone will have a different game plan and range of techniques in their arsenal. Specific pressure testing will help you hone and perfect your own individual game.

Sparring (Rolling) / free time -

This is your chance to interact with any of the instructors or anyone else you choose in any way you like, whether it be sparing, drilling, specific position testing, chatting, asking questions, or problem-solving, the decision is completely yours.

Finished.

The class will formally end, hopefully you've had some good fun, a tough workout and are looking forward to your next session!
