Welcome to 24 Jiu Jitsu Caerphilly!
We believe in fostering a positive, respectful, and safe training environment for everyone. These dojo etiquette guidelines help ensure everyone can train, learn, and improve with confidence.
Please read and follow them before stepping on the mats.
Respect and care for your partners as you would for yourself. BJJ is cooperative; prioritise partner safety and avoid excessive force during drills or sparring.
For hygiene and safety, always remove shoes before stepping onto the mat. Wear footwear when off the mats (e.g., to and from the toilets or changing areas).
Ensure your gi, rashguard, and other gear are clean before every class.
Good personal hygiene is essential in a close-contact sport like Jiu Jitsu โ shower regularly and come clean for training.
Keep fingernails and toenails short and clean. Long nails or jewellery can cause injuries to you or others during grappling.
Treat all members, instructors, volunteers, and visitors with respect, regardless of rank, age, gender, or background. Avoid offensive language or behaviour that makes others uncomfortable.
Focus on the instructorโs demonstrations and explanations. Avoid unnecessary talking or distractions so everyone can get the most out of class.
If you have technique or safety questions, ask after class or during designated Q&A time. Try not to interrupt demonstrations.
Arrive on time for class. If youโre late, wait at the edge of the mat until the instructor invites you on.
Tapping early is part of training safely.
When caught in a submission:
Tap clearly with your hand, foot, or verbally;
Your partner should release immediately when you tap.
Failing to tap, resisting a submission, or training beyond your limits increases the risk of injury.
Train with control and adjust your intensity to your partnerโs level.
BJJ is skill-based, not about brute strength. Train to learn, not to dominate.
If you are sick, have contagious symptoms, open wounds, or skin infections (e.g., ringworm, impetigo, staph), do not train until cleared by a medical professional.
If you notice a possible skin infection on yourself or a training partner, report it to an instructor immediately.
You are responsible for ensuring you are physically fit to train.
If you have pre-existing injuries, joint instability, medical conditions, or any doubt about training safely, you should seek medical advice before attending class.
24 Jiu Jitsu Caerphilly instructors are not medical professionals and do not provide medical diagnosis or treatment.
Instructors may:
Control training pace and intensity;
Limit or stop activities;
Pair or separate partners;
Refuse participation for safety reasons.
You agree to follow all safety instructions given by instructors.
Leave ego at the door. BJJ is a journey of continuous learning and improvement โ embrace challenges with humility.
If something feels wrong, communicate it clearly.
Look after your partner and help maintain a welcoming, motivating environment for everyone.
Dojo etiquette guidelines are subject to change at the discretion of club management.
Please ensure you are familiar with the latest edition of these rules.
By following these guidelines, we create a space where everyone can train, grow, and enjoy the journey together.
