Welcome to 24 Jiu Jitsu Club - Dojo Etiquette
At 24 Jiu Jitsu Club, we believe in fostering a positive and respectful environment for all members. As part of our commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable training space, we kindly request that everyone adheres to the following dojo etiquette guidelines:
1. Look After Your Training Partners: Respect and care for your training partners as you would for yourself. Jiu Jitsu is a cooperative martial art, and everyone should be treated with kindness and consideration. Avoid using excessive force during drills or sparring, and always prioritise your partner's safety.
2. No Shoes on the Mat: For hygiene and safety reasons, please remove your shoes before stepping onto the training mat. This helps to keep the training area clean and prevents debris and bacteria from being brought onto the mat.
3. Clean Training Kit: Ensure your training attire, including your gi (uniform), rashguards, and other equipment, is clean before each class. Maintaining good hygiene is essential for the comfort and well-being of all participants.
4. Short Nails: Keep your nails short and clean. Long nails can cause accidental injuries to you and your training partners during grappling exchanges. Trimming your nails regularly contributes to a safer training environment.
5. Be Respectful to Everyone: Respect is the cornerstone of our club's culture. Treat all members, instructors, and visitors with respect, regardless of rank, age, gender, or background. Avoid using offensive language or behaviour that could make others feel uncomfortable.
6. Pay Attention and Be Present: During class, focus on the instructor's teachings and demonstrations. Avoid unnecessary talking or distractions, as it helps you and your training partners get the most out of each session.
7. Ask Questions Appropriately: If you have questions about techniques or concepts, feel free to ask the instructors or higher-ranked students after class or during designated Q&A sessions. However, avoid interrupting the instructor during their explanations.
8. Punctuality: Arrive on time for classes to show respect for your fellow practitioners and instructors. If you are running late, wait at the edge of the mat until the instructor gives you permission to join the class.
9. Maintain Personal Hygiene: Good personal hygiene is crucial in a close-contact sport like Jiu Jitsu. Please shower before training and you're fresh.
10. Wear shoes to the toilet and when off the mats: It's a contact sport, let's stay clean and hygienic. The concrete area where the benches are is a shoes/flip flop on area - as is the toilet.
11. No gi / gi: If rolling you're no gi, and your partner has a gi on - don't set grips or strangle the piss out of them using their lapel, it's not good sportsman ship.
12. No Ego: Leave your ego at the door. Jiu Jitsu is a journey of continuous learning and improvement. Embrace the challenges and mistakes, and focus on growing as a martial artist and individual. Your journey is personal to you
13. Infections :
BJJ is a contact sport and as a result any infections / illnesses can spread like wild fire.
1. Illness - If you've got anything you think might be contagious skip training and don't return until you're clear.
2. Infections (skin) - These can include things like ringworm, staph, harpies or Impetigo. If you've got anything remotely out the ordinary get it checked, be visual and check often. We do our bit to clean the mats after every session but we need your help with this. If you see anything on a training partner let us or them know and we'll get it looked at straight away.
By adhering to these dojo etiquette guidelines, we can create an environment where everyone feels welcome and motivated to improve their Jiu Jitsu skills. Let's support each other's journey in the world of 24 Jiu Jitsu Club!
Note: These dojo etiquette guidelines are subject to change at the discretion of the club's management. Please ensure you are familiar with the latest guidelines and updates.
