Welcome
Welcome to 24 Jiu Jitsu Caerphilly.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a challenging and rewarding martial art that builds confidence, discipline, resilience, and physical skill. Our aim is to provide a safe, supportive, respectful, and well-coached environment for all students.
Before stepping onto the mats, it is essential that responsibilities, risks, and expectations are clearly understood.
1. Nature of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Assumption of Risk
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a physical, contact martial art involving grappling, throws, takedowns, chokes, and joint-locking submission techniques.
You acknowledge and accept that:
-
Participation in BJJ involves inherent risks, including but not limited to sprains, strains, bruising, joint injuries or dislocations, loss of consciousness, and other injuries;
-
While injuries are uncommon and serious injuries are rare, no contact sport or martial art is risk-free;
-
Participation is voluntary.
For adult participants:
You accept full responsibility for your own body, decisions, and actions during training.
For minors:
The parent or legal guardian accepts these risks on behalf of the child and consents to their participation.
24 Jiu Jitsu Caerphilly and its instructors strive to provide a safe, controlled training environment. However, all participants acknowledge that training is undertaken at their own risk, except where liability cannot be excluded by law (e.g. proven negligence).
1.5 Training With Other Participants
You acknowledge that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu involves close physical interaction with other participants of varying experience, size, strength, and control.
You accept that accidental injury may occur as a result of actions or mistakes by training partners, and that such risks are inherent to training.
You agree that 24 Jiu Jitsu Caerphilly is not responsible for injuries arising from the ordinary actions of other participants during supervised training, except where liability cannot be excluded by law.
2. Tapping Out & Submission Safety (Very Important)
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uses submission techniques such as joint locks and chokes to simulate real control.
You acknowledge and agree that:
-
Tapping out early and clearly (by tapping with the hand, foot, or verbally) is essential for safety;
-
Some techniques, particularly joint locks, may not cause immediate pain before injury occurs;
-
Failing to tap in time, resisting submissions, or attempting to “tough it out” can result in serious injury;
-
Instructors may briefly apply techniques for demonstration or safety purposes and will release immediately upon a tap or instruction to stop;
-
Choosing not to tap, ignoring instruction, or training beyond personal limits is done entirely at the participant’s own risk.
There is no reward for toughness in training — tapping early is a core safety principle of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
For minors, parents/guardians acknowledge that instructors will reinforce these principles and supervise training appropriately for age and ability.
3. Instructor Authority & Class Safety
For the safety of all participants, instructors have full authority to:
-
Control the pace and intensity of training;
-
Limit or stop any activity at any time;
-
Restrict or refuse live sparring;
-
Pair or separate training partners;
-
Require rest or removal from training for safety reasons;
-
Refuse participation where behaviour, intensity, emotional state, or physical condition is deemed unsafe.
All participants agree to follow instructor direction at all times.
Parents/guardians acknowledge and support instructor authority in managing class safety.
3.5 Unsafe or Aggressive Behaviour
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training requires emotional control, respect, and cooperation.
Any behaviour deemed aggressive, reckless, emotionally unstable, or unsafe — including excessive force, refusal to follow instructions, or disregard for training partners — may result in immediate modification or termination of training without refund.
Such decisions are made solely in the interest of safety and dojo wellbeing.
4. Medical Fitness, Responsibility & No Medical Advice
24 Jiu Jitsu Caerphilly instructors are not medical professionals.
Any guidance given during training is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice.
You acknowledge that:
-
Responsibility for ensuring physical fitness to train lies solely with the participant (or parent/guardian for minors);
-
Any pre-existing injuries, joint instability, recurring conditions, or medical issues must be disclosed before training;
-
If there is any doubt about the ability to train safely, medical advice should be sought before attending class.
Participants (or parents/guardians) agree to immediately inform an instructor if there is pain, injury, dizziness, illness, or concern during training.
If in doubt — STOP.
In the event of an emergency where the participant is unable to consent, you authorise 24 Jiu Jitsu Caerphilly staff to arrange appropriate medical assistance.
4.5 Hygiene, Skin Conditions & Infection Control
You acknowledge that close-contact sports carry a risk of skin infections.
Participants must not train with untreated skin infections, open wounds, or contagious conditions.
All cuts or abrasions must be properly covered.
Instructors may refuse participation if a condition appears unsafe or contagious.
Responsibility for personal hygiene and reporting concerns lies with the participant (or parent/guardian for minors).
5. Dojo Etiquette, Conduct & Safety Rules
All members must follow the dojo etiquette, conduct rules, and safety guidelines published at:
? https://24jjcaerphilly.co.uk/page/dojo-ett
These rules form part of this agreement.
Failure to follow these rules may result in modified training, suspension, or refusal of participation for safety reasons.
6. Booking & Insurance Cover
All sessions must be pre-booked through the club system before stepping onto the mats.
You acknowledge that:
-
Booking activates insurance cover;
-
Attending without booking may invalidate insurance cover;
-
Booking helps manage class sizes and coaching supervision safely.
7. Photography & Media Use
From time to time, photographs or video recordings may be taken during classes or events for training, educational, or promotional purposes.
By signing this agreement, you consent to the use of such images by 24 Jiu Jitsu Caerphilly unless you notify the club in writing that you do not wish to be included.
8. Mutual Commitment
24 Jiu Jitsu Caerphilly commits to providing professional coaching, care, and a respectful training environment.
In return, all participants agree to:
-
Train responsibly and respectfully;
-
Look after training partners;
-
Communicate concerns clearly and promptly;
-
Support a positive, inclusive dojo culture.
9. No Guarantee of Outcome
Participation in training does not guarantee progression, belt promotion, fitness improvements, injury prevention, or specific outcomes.
10. Severability
If any part of this agreement is found to be unenforceable or invalid under applicable law, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
